Seminar
on Leadership Behavior and Ethical Values |
Ethical
values have assumed paramount importance in the today's complex
business world but we are hesitant to talk on ethics and ethical
values in India said Dr. J.L. Gupta, Principal, Shri Ram Collage
of Commerce, University of Delhi in a seminar on Leadership
Behaviour and ethical value at India Institute of Finace, New
Delhi tody.
According
to Prof. Gupta managers as leaders have always been discussing
and debating about social responsibilities of business. According
to him most courses on management in the past did not include
anything on business ethics. However, lately business ethics
has appearing as an important component in the management courses.
Business leaders need to pursue ethical values for several reasons.
Dr. Gupta feels the business leaders are not born but made through
appropriate ting provided a person has necessary potential.
Acording to Dr. Gupta dynamic leadership is lacking today whish
a which is a wise use of power. According to him a leader requires
to posses sensivity, credibility, flexibility and trust so as
to be a dymnamic business leader. Leadership accroding to Dr.
Gupta is interpersonal power to influence. Drawing a distinction
between a leader and a manager and their influence on a business
Dr. Gupta feels that the people in organisations today are over
manaed but underled . While managers focus more on system, structure
and influencing the mind of the pepole, leaders often influencing
the heart, the feelings and emotions and just the minds leaders
often focus on what should be done and according a closer to
pursuing ethical values.
The
current wake of scandals, financial laundering and annexure
between some politicians, bureaucrats and business men have
raised serval issues on the question of leadership and ethical
values, said Prof.
J.D. Agarwal, Director, Indian Institute of Finance while
introducing Dr. Gupta in the above seminar. Dr. Agarwal emphasised
a strong need of ethics for leaders in general, and business
leaders in particular. According to him there is a great need
for emphasising and teching of ethics in the courses on business
management.
