on Anglo French Textile Mil-Revival of a Sick Unit- A
Case Study |

basic necessities of the works will be taken care of but we
want productivity was a dictum adopted by Mr. P.M. Nair, Former
Chairman and Managing Director of Anglo French Textile Mills,
Pondicherry while reviving a sick unit at brink of disaster
when he tookover the charge in 1987. Mr. Nair, presently Jt.
Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India was addressing
a seminar at the Indian Institute of Finance on a Revival of
a Sick Mill. Mr. Nair speaking on the occasion said that he
introduced identical uniform for all including the Chairman
without any washing allowance, unlimited food to all the workers
without subsidy at a reasonable price, one canteen for all officers
and workers, free education, free medical and introduced a concept
of family where the problems of workers were handled by mill.
Mr. Nair initially had dual charge and he could take about 14
people on deputation from the Govt. of pondicherry for revival.
Within a short period he could revive the mill employing more
than 6890 workers and produced extremely good result. The sales
turnover shootup to 7.6 crores in 1991 form 2.16 crores in 1987,
exports touched a figure of 3246 lakhs in 1991 from 675 lakhs
in 1987, Mr. Nair talked about goals and the strategies and
procedures which he followed in reviving the sick unit. As a
part of the starategies and produced which he followed in reviving
the sick unit. As a part of the starategies he introduced 7
days week, could bring down cost whereever possible and ensuring
industrial peace, rationalised labour to increase productivity.
Mr. Nair said trust, transparency in operations and not sccumbing
to pressures is necessary for undertking this type of activity.
Mr. also told at the seminar that at the initial stages he received
threatening calls but ultimately trust prevailed and he could
introduce democracy and declare a bonus of 12 percent because
of the productivity
Prof.
Kanti Swarup, Professor at IIF while thanking Mr. Nair said
that he has done a great job of saving about 6800 families form
brink of the starvation and introducing life in a sick and dying
textile mill.
